Workshops
The Youth Achieve workshops emphasize exposure to real life scenarios that build life skills and enable participants to pursue postgraduate employment or higher education.
Program Description
Throughout the course of the Youth Achieve program, participants will visit local universities and community colleges, gain exposure to cultural events, hone academic skills, network with young professionals and participate in job fairs.
- Introductions and icebreakers
- Letter writing exercise "what can I get for free?"
- Youth Achieve volunteers will assist mentees in writing a formal business letter. These letters are aimed at teaching mentees not only how to write a formal business letter, but also how to ask for something. In the past, students have received, autographs and free cosmetic products.
- Internet scavenger hunt
- In today's society, mastery of the Internet is essential. The Internet scavenger hunt exercise is designed to teach mentees how to find useful information on the Internet
- A trip to the music studio with local rap artist Incwell
- Youth Achieve mentees will get to travel to Avalon Studios in Bethesda, Maryland. Mentees will have the option to record their own songs and interact with professional DJs and MCs.
- A trip to the FBI
- Youth Achieve Mentees will get the chance to tour the FBI building located in Washington, D.C. Find out more here: http://www.fbi.gov/aboutus/tour/tour.htm. - A trip to the University of Maryland
- Youth Achieve mentees will have the opportunity to tour the College Park campus. Mentees will also have the opportunity to attend a college level class.
- College Tours
- Youth Achieve and The Black Law Students Association have collaborated to give mentees the opportunity to tour several Universities in Virginia, Maryland Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., free of charge!
- Resume Workshop
- Youth Achieve volunteers will share and teach the importance of a stellar resume. Volunteers will assist mentees in creating and improving their resumes.
- Local business job fair
- Youth Achieve in collaboration with several other local area nonprofits will arrange for a local business job fair. Mentees will have the opportunity to interview with local businesses in hopes of finding after school employment.
